The forest of the Ettersberg was already a popular hunting and excursion area during the times of the Weimar dukes, as evidenced by the Ettersburg Castle on its northern edge. A Bismarck Tower with a popular excursion inn was built on the southern slope. Star-shaped clearings were cut into the forest and paths were gradually created. Not even the radical transformation of the area during the construction and operation of the Buchenwald concentration camp and the associated armament factories could change this. The clearings and paths have deeply etched themselves into the face of the mountain over time and continue to shape its appearance to this day. Exploring the Ettersberg near Weimar offers a delightful hiking experience.

Der Wald des Ettersbergs war schon zu Zeiten der Weimarer Herzรถge ein beliebtes Jagd- und Ausflugsgebiet, wovon die Ettersburg an seinem Nordrand zeugt. Am Sรผdhang wurde ein Bismarckturm mit einer beliebten Ausflugsgaststรคtte errichtet. Sternfรถrmige Lichtungen wurden in den Wald geschlagen und nach und nach wurden Wege angelegt. Daran konnte auch die radikale Umgestaltung des Gebietes durch den Bau und Betrieb des Konzentrationslagers Buchenwald und der dazugehรถrigen Rรผstungsbetriebe nichts รคndern. Die Rodungen und Wege haben sich im Laufe der Zeit tief in das Gesicht des Berges eingegraben und prรคgen sein Erscheinungsbild bis heute. Die Erkundung des Ettersbergs bei Weimar ist ein reizvolles Wandererlebnis.
